Aromatherapy for female hair loss is becoming an increasingly popular treatment. After hearing success stories, many women who were once skeptical are slowly becoming intrigued. Using fragrant botanicals oils to grow hair and reduce hair loss may seem like a far-fetched idea until you learn how it works.
It makes more sense when one understands that the therapeutic effects come from the unique chemical composition of each individual essential oil - not simply from the aroma.
To promote hair growth, aromatherapy formulas are massaged into the scalp. Because the molecules of essential oils are very small and because they are lipophilic, they are almost immediately absorbed into the skin and hair follicles.
The most well known benefit of essential oils is the ability to increase circulation. The scalp being an extremity is one of the hardest places for blood to circulate to. The hair follicles receive nutrients through the blood supply. If circulation is poor, follicles will become malnourished, the root will suffer and the hair will not grow to its full potential and hair loss is more likely to occur.
The foundation for healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. Essential oils cleanse the scalp of excess oil called sebum which is a common cause of hair loss. If not thoroughly cleansed this excess oil turns into wax, clogging the follicles and creating a barrier for the new hair to penetrate. If the hair does manage to push through the wax it will be weak and frail not likely to survive. Essential oils also cleanse the scalp of dead skin cells and environmental pollutants.
Essential oils transport oxygen to the roots of our hair and to every cell in our body. This increased oxygen helps to revitalize cells within our scalp, skin and entire system. Essential oils are known to have cellular regenerative properties, having the unique ability to penetrate the layers of skin all the way down to the dermal layer where cells are formed.
Essential oils are very compatible with our skin and hair. They are directly absorbed into keratin (which is what are hair and nail are made of) and they have a unique ability to penetrate the cuticle and cortex layers of the hair. Because of this ability, essential oils are one of the few products that can actually facilitate true hair repair.
Their antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities can assist in many scalp conditions which can hinder hair growth and contribute to hair loss.
The stimulating and healing effects essential oils have on hair follicles gives them the unique ability to improve most types of female hair loss. As long as the follicle is alive and undamaged (as in most cases of female hair loss) there is potential for regrowth.
Although essential oils are very effective to increase hair growth and minimize hair loss, they are only part of the equation. Physical and emotional health and well-being along with proper nutrition are equally important.
