Sudden Hair Loss - Causes and Treatments of Sudden Hair Loss

Sudden hair loss is just that: you notice a clump of hair or more hair than usually appears in your comb and brush. You should seek medical attention to determine the cause. Once the cause of your sudden hair loss is discovered you and your doctor can decide in the treatment that will best suit your needs.

Causes of Hair Reduction

Women who are pregnant or go through childbirth will experience hormonal changes. These changes in hormone levels could trigger hair loss. If birth control is being used hair may thin out as well. Men whose bodies make testosterone also may experience hair loss. Men whose bodies have ceased making testosterone do not have this baldness.

Certain medications will cause sudden hair fall out. These medications include those used in chemotherapy and radiation therapy. When treatment is suspended hair will grow back but it will take months for real results to be seen.

Serious illnesses and extremely high fevers may also trigger sudden hair problems. Along these lines thyroid problems could also play a part in hair loss. When the illness is over or the thyroid problems treated hair may begin to grow back over time.

Physical stress and emotional stressors may contribute to sudden hair fall out as well. Emotional stressors may trigger nervous habits such as pulling out hair or pulling on it. Excessive rubbing of your scalp can also cause hair reduction.

A substance called DHT - dihydrotestosterone is found in excess in the scalp. DHT tends to shrink hair follicles. As a result it cuts off the growth process and thus hair fall out.
There are treatments that block the development of DHT and stop hair loss.

Treatments of Sudden Hair Fall Out

There are topical treatments for sudden hair loss such as Rogaine (minoxidil). Oral medication includes Propecia (finasteride). Propecia has been effective in treating the top of the head and the mid-scalp areas but not enough information is available regarding its effectiveness with receding hairlines or balding in the temple areas. It may take up to 3 months before any results are noted. There may be sexual side effects which include a low sex drive, trouble getting an erection, or a reduction in the quantity of semen a man produces.

There are more serious side effects such as swelling in the face and lips, breast pain, lumps, and discharge from the nipples. When men stopped Propecia for this reason the problems went away. Women who are or may be pregnant should not come in contact with crushed Propecia tablets as this can cause abnormalities in unborn male babies.

Natural supplements are a blend of ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and herbal extracts. These ingredients together are known to help hair loss, sudden hair loss or otherwise. Some of these ingredients may be B vitamins, minerals such as magnesium, and herbal extracts such as pumpkin.

Never change your health regimen without checking with your doctor. Though these are natural ingredients they may affect any other prescription drugs you may be taking for other health conditions. There are few side effects if any at all and though they are safe you still consult your doctor.
