The following is a list of the things that may lead to hair loss:
Prolonged, chronic illness. Disorders of the kidney and liver, and poly-cystic-ovary-syndrome in women, can result in abnormal hair loss.
Hormonal imbalance. Abandoned diabetes, afflictions of the thyroid gland, excessive secretion of the male hormone androgen in females, pregnancy, among other factors may interfere with the production of new hair follicles. This causes thinning of hair.
Continued medications. The sustained use of some medicines, like isotretinoin used to cure bipolar disorder, or antibiotics, or diet pills, or anticoagulants, antidepressants, Vitamin A supplements, chemotherapeutic drugs and such others can cause hair loss.
Alopecia areata. This is a skin disease that reduces the hair on the scalp and other parts of the body as well. In this autoimmune disorder, the immune system of an individual destroys their own hair follicles. The onset o this disease occurs in the childhood. The hair may grow back, but this does not happen in all cases.
Trichotillomania. This is a psychosomatic disorder in which the patient uncontrollably pulls out their own hair. This created bald patches on the scalp.
Hair styling. Use of harsh chemicals on the hair, like coloring or perming or straightening the hair can damage the hair follicles, leading to hair fall. Tying back the hair too tightly can also put tension on the scalp that creates damage to the hair. These types of hair loss can be temporary or permanent.
Lack of nutrition. Poor eating habits and unbalanced diet contribute to hair loss. Patients suffering from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia often experience excessive hair loss. Intake of a balanced diet with sufficient protein and carbohydrates is essential for the health of the hair. Lack of minerals like iron in the diet makes sustenance of hair growth difficult. This can lead to hair fall as well
Disruption of the hair growth cycle. Events like the birth of an issue, and even a major surgery can lead to temporary hair loss, because of the stress of the operation. However, the effect might not be perceptible until after months of the event. This is because hair takes a long time to grow. More often than not, this type of hair loss is naturally replenished.
Fungal infections of the scalp. This causes loss of hair in children; the condition can be treated with antifungal drugs.
Lifestyle disorders. Excessive stress, lack of sleep, improper fluid intake and other such factors cause hair loss.
Since abnormal hair loss might be the early indication of some grave malady, it is essential to discover the root cause in order that further complications can be prevented.
